Why should you take supplements?

You may remember as a kid being told to take your vitamins. As adults we can sometimes forget that advice and begin to wonder why we constantly get colds, feel run down and just are generally not feeling well. Supplements are meant to help make up for vitamins and other nutrients that may be missing in your diet. An excellent example is taking extra Vitamin D in the winter when there is less sunshine to allow you to absorb it naturally. Need more reasons? Here are some good reasons why you should be taking supplements on a regular basis.
1. Boost your immune system! Everyone around you is getting sick, but you are less likely if you are getting the right amount of vitamins in your diet.
2. Prevent injuries! Your muscles use vitamins too and the lack of them can allow strains, tears and other injuries to occur more frequently.
3. Stay balanced! Your body is constantly processing nutrients. A deficiency in one area can begin to wear on other systems and even your mood!
4. Relax! Always stressed? Can’t sleep? A multi-vitamin can help keep your body even-keeled and running smooth, taking it easy on your nerves.
5. Improved appearance! Some supplements can help improve the strength and look of your hair, skin and nails. When you look good you feel good!
6. Prevent disease! Besides the common cold, some supplements have been linked to the prevention of some issues such as high cholesterol and osteoperosis. They help improve your overall health!
7. Supplement deficiencies! People with specific medical conditions, such as anemia, Crohn’s disease and cancer, can benefit from the use of supplements that will replace what sickness is removing from their bodies. Talk to your doctor for recommendations!
Remember that everyone has different needs and our bodies may need different supplements in various stages of life. Supplements do not replace the need for a well-balanced diet and exercise. They are meant to supplement on top of those healthy habits. Talk to your pharmacist about what may be the right course for you!
