The Historical Evolution of Alternative Medication
Since the origin of pharmacy centuries ago, the traditional role of the pharmacist has been the preparation of medicines in the final dosage form. Pharmacists are among the most respected healthcare professionals and patients have long valued their advice and expertise.
In the years following World War II, commercial pharmaceutical companies began to manufacture and market medicines in the final dosage form. Today, about one percent of the four to five billion prescriptions dispensed annually require compounding by a pharmacist. Over the last decade, there has been a resurgence in the compounding role of the pharmacist. Commercial medications that are no longer available or are in short supply. Because of this specific strengths and dosage forms have made compounding pharmacies a necessity to fill patient needs.
